Abstract Positron and photon emitting radionuclides have been used as the labels of radiotracers for in medical imaging studies for over five decades. In the last ten years, interest and applications for these technologies have grown at a dramatically increasing rate. This growth is underpinned by fundamental nuclear and particle physics, nuclear and radiochemistry, and imaging science. This talk will describe the physical principles and infrastructure that make nuclear medicine work and discuss the example of positron-emitting radioisotopes of manganese in particular, examining retrospectively almost ten years of work building tools to quantify the physiological expressions of diabetes and pain.
