Atmospheric Physics

Course description

Atmospheric physics is a fascinating field as it covers several aspects of physics such as thermodynamics, fluiddynamics, radiative transfer but also physical chemistry and modelling. In order to understand environmental issues like greenhouse warming or ozone depletion a thorough understanding of atmospheric physics and its processes is needed. The course offers the basics that are important to understand the structure of the atmosphere and fundamental physical and chemical processes.

Topics include

  • Vertical structure
  • Thermodynamics of the atmosphere
  • Radiation and energy
  • Basics of atmospheric dynamics
  • Chemical concepts, ozone layer, trace gases
  • Remote sensing of the atmosphere
