Course Information
This course is intended for students in the 3rd semester majoring in Physics or Astronomy. The required prerequisites are Physics I and II as well as Physics Practical Course I completed in the 2nd semester. Practical Course II constitutes the second part of the introductory Practical Course.
Literature: Lecture notes for Practical Training II are available as a PDF on ILIAS. A paper script can be ordered at dora.zimmerer@unibe.ch. The cost is CHF 25.00.
Registration is possible as from approximately three weeks before the start of the semester. Registration is mandatory via the KSL and additionally via the group registration list on ILIAS. Both registrations are required.
The practical course takes place on site in groups of two students and has a maximum capacity of 48 participants. If more than 48 students register, places will be allocated according to the date of registration.
Introductory meeting and group allocation: location and schedule tba. Attendance is compulsory. Available time slots for the groups: Monday early (A), Monday late (B), Thursday early (C), Thursday late (D), Friday early (E). Time schedule A, C early = 12:30–15:45 / Time schedule B, D late = 16:00–19:15 / Time schedule E: 13:30–16:45.
Content: Experimental work covering the following topics: Experimental work on the Millikan experiment; photoelectric effect; radioactivity, counting statistics and statistical distributions; Doppler effect; Electronics I (passive components); Electronics II (active components); hysteresis of a toroidal coil; Acoustics (spectral analysis of a gong); Fraunhofer diffraction at slit apertures.
