The degree programs in Physics and Physics with specialization in Astronomy follow a three-stage structure: Bachelor's (3 years), Master 's (1.5 years) and PhD (3 to 4 years).

The admission requirements for studies at the Faculty are governed by Articles 10 to 14 UniV (in German or French), while the matriculation procedure is governed by Articles 70 to 76 UniSt (in German).
The following prior educational qualifications and study certificates qualify applicants for admission to Bachelor’s studies:
- Swiss High School Leavers' Certificate (Matura) or Degree
- International High School Leaver's Certificate or Degree (Swiss-recognized)

Admission to Master’s studies is governed by Article 49 RSL Phil.-nat. 18.
Applicants are generally required to hold a Bachelor’s degree in Physics from a Swiss University or an equivalent recognized international degree. This degree must comprise either at least 90 ECTS credits in Physics/Astronomy and 30 ECTS credits in Mathematics, or at least 60 ECTS credits in Physics/Astronomy and 60 ECTS credits in Mathematics.
Following an individual assessment, additional requirements of up to 60 ECTS credits may be imposed. The degree used for the assessment must not be more than ten years old.

Admission as a doctoral candidate requires a university Master’s degree based on at least three years of Bachelor’s studies, or an equivalent university degree from a state-recognized or state-accredited university; see Article 31 UniV (in German or French).
