This lecture is the third part of a three-part course on the mathematical methods required in theoretical physics. The following topics are covered:

  • Brief review of the Fourier transform
  • Distribution theory
    • Introduction of the delta function and Green’s functions using the example of forced oscillations
    • Distributions: formal definition and computational rules
    • Principal value
  • Complex analysis
    • Cauchy–Riemann differential equations
    • Cauchy’s theorem
    • Identity theorem and analytic continuation
    • Laurent series
    • Complex logarithm
    • Residue theorem and applications
