The Building of the Exact Sciences (ExWi)

This building houses the institutes of the so-called exact sciences, known in German as Exakte Wissenschaften and abbreviated as ExWi. Although, strictly speaking, only mathematics can truly be described as exact, the three Physics Institutes as well as the Institutes of Astronomy and Statistics are also located here.

To make it easier to find your way through the building, the following section provides a brief overview of the layout of the ExWi. When entering the building from Sidlerstrasse, you will see the central notice board and an orientation board on your left. The notice board lists lectures offered by the various institutes, including the lecturer’s name, the lecture title, the date and time, and the designated lecture hall. So how do you find A6, B7, 099, or any of the other room numbers?

The orientation board provides the key. The ExWi consists of two main sections. You are initially in the old building, which has six floors. Rooms in this part of the building are identified by three-digit numbers. The first digit indicates the floor level: the ground floor is numbered 0, the upper floors are 1, 2, and 3, while the two basement levels are numbered 9 and 8. The remaining digits follow a mathematically positive direction around the library, whose main entrance is located on the first floor.

Facing the train station is the newer terrace building, which is offset by half a floor relative to the two basement levels of the old building. This section consists of three levels, labelled A, B, and C. The C level does not contain rooms accessible to students. As in the old building, room numbering follows a mathematically positive direction, although the various side corridors can make orientation challenging. Here, perseverance is often the best strategy.

A detailed floor plan of the ExWi, designed to help you find your way around the building, is available below.

Useful Infrastructure in the ExWi

In addition to the lecture halls, the ExWi also contains other rooms that will be useful to you:

  • The central library in the old building has already been mentioned. It can be accessed from all three upper floors. On the first floor, you will find the card catalogues as well as several computers that allow you to search the holdings of the ExWi Library, the ETH Library in Zurich, and other libraries. In addition to these reference tools, this floor also houses current scientific journals and newspapers. The library team’s office (room 111) is also located on this floor. The staff will be happy to assist you with any questions regarding the use of the library. An introductory library tour usually takes place during the second week of the semester (for details, please consult the notice board or the Library of Exact Sciences). If you continue up the staircase, you will reach the mathematics and statistics section. One floor higher, you will find the book collections in physics and astronomy.
  • Student workspaces are available in the library and on the third floor of the old building. Additional workspaces can be found on the B level of the terrace building, in rooms B2 and B3, overlooking the train station.
  • A photocopier is also available in workspace B2. It is operated by the MathStatInfo and Physics & Astronomy student councils and is the only photocopier in the ExWi that can be used with coins. An A4 photocopy costs CHF 0.10. A binding machine is also available, allowing you to bind your own scripts for CHF 2.
  • Notice boards of the student councils are located at the workspaces on the third floor and in front of lecture hall B6. These provide information about the student councils’ current activities.
  • If you wish to use a computer, several workstations are available in the various computer pools. These include PCs running Windows and iMacs with macOS. Please note that the use of external storage devices may pose security risks, as computer viruses can also be encountered within the university network. For several semesters now, UNIX-based systems have also been available to physics students. Access to these systems requires a special user account. Further information will be provided during the semester.
  • At the Sidlerstrasse entrance, you will find the building services reception desk, where you can obtain information about responsible staff members and room locations.
